Don’t Just Evaluate the Economics — Understand Who You’re Truly Partnering With

Succession Insights: Latest Trends in Wealth Management M&A

When advisors evaluate a transition, strategic partnership, or sale, they primarily focus on economics. But understanding ownership is just as critical.

Who owns the firm? What does the cap table look like, and where does control ultimately reside? If ownership or control changes in the future, how could that affect me and my practice?

These are some of the most important – and often overlooked – questions advisors should ask before making a long-term commitment.

Throughout my career, I’ve watched countless ownership changes reshape wealth management firms. It’s not uncommon to meet advisors who have never changed firms, yet have found themselves working under three different entities, each with its own leadership, compensation structure, and culture.

And today, private equity plays an increasingly significant role in wealth management.

I’ve had several firms tell me, “If our private equity partner sells to another private equity firm, nothing will change for advisors.”

Maybe.

But history suggests it’s worth asking more questions.

The key isn’t just who owns the firm. It’s understanding who controls it and what that means for you. When control shifts, the advisor experience can change as well – sometimes for the better, sometimes not.

Before making one of the most important decisions of your career, don’t just evaluate the economics. Understand who you’re truly partnering with.
