Succession Insights: Latest Trends in Wealth Management M&A

One of the most rewarding parts of my career isn’t just helping advisors make important business decisions. It’s hearing how those decisions changed their lives years later.

Twelve years ago, I worked with an advisor generating $2 million in annual revenue who decided to leave a wirehouse. His decision wasn’t driven by a higher payout alone. He wanted to become an equity owner, find a culture that better aligned with his values, and create greater long-term opportunity for himself and his family.

We’re still friends today. Recently, he told me that one decision helped pay for both of his daughters’ college educations. It enabled him and his wife to buy the beach house they had always dreamed about. More importantly, it gave them the financial freedom to enjoy life with far less financial stress.

That conversation reminded me why these decisions matter. We spend a lot of time in this industry talking about payouts, valuations, equity, and deal structures. Those conversations are important, but they’re only part of the equation.

The full equation looks more like:
• Build substantial value in your practice.
• Diversify your wealth.
• Use what you’ve built to create the life you’ve worked so hard to earn.

Because the greatest return isn’t always measured in dollars. Sometimes it’s measured in freedom, peace of mind, and the ability to enjoy the people and moments that matter most.
