For the last 25 years, technology has made independence more accessible in wealth management. Today, what it takes to thrive is evolving.
In addition to keeping up with the increasing complexity of AI, cybersecurity, and compliance, many Independent and RIA advisors are now also looking toward acquisitions.
The logic is sound, as the industry faces the historic retirement of nearly half of all advisors. In practice, executing and competing with larger firms on deal terms, infrastructure, and stability is increasingly challenging.
I recently spoke with a small RIA firm that wanted to grow through acquisitions. But sourcing deals, securing financing, and integrating teams while running the day-to-day business became difficult to do well.
“I didn’t have the infrastructure to do it right.”
This is where the real dilemma emerges, or what we call the “Build-or-Merge Moment.”
Independent and RIA advisors worked for years to achieve independence, so merging can feel like a step backward. But not necessarily. If done well, you can retain what you’ve built while leveraging a strategic partnership to support the next phase of growth.
It doesn’t have to mean losing what matters most about independence. It’s about determining the structure that best supports the next phase of growth.
