Recent industry data indicates that, after an extraordinary run-up, Wealth Management practice valuations have largely leveled off.
This reinforces my own observations from consulting on more than $83 billion in wealth management M&A transactions.
So, what does this mean for advisors?
It changes the risk/return equation.
Today’s environment is different than it was a few years ago. Equity markets remain near all-time highs, valuation multiples remain historically elevated, and the cost of capital is higher. While no one knows what the future holds, assuming time alone will create more value may no longer be the best strategy.
Meanwhile, buyers remain active, but they’re becoming more selective. Firms with consistent organic growth, strong client relationships, recurring revenue, and scalable businesses continue to command premium valuations.
My takeaway is simple: Today’s M&A market offers unprecedented flexibility in deal structures to help advisors achieve a wide range of strategic objectives. Know your options now, so you’re prepared when the timing is right.
